Could your company function if all of its computers were hacked?

Updated: 3 days ago

Just a few weeks ago, an aluminium manufacturing company in Oslo was brought to its knees when every single computer was taken out of action by hackers. All that workers could see was a message demanding payment or loss of access forever.

The BBC reported that factory workers had to resort to pen and paper, dig out years’ old files and draft in retired employees in a bid to manage orders without the online systems on which they relied.

Five weeks later, their 40 offices across the world are still recovering.

What had happened? A ransomware attack.

If you’ve been following our blogs, you’ll be familiar with this kind of crime. Criminals crack a business’ computer system, install malicious software and demand money in return for freeing the company’s devices.

The result can be catastrophic with long lasting consequences. Businesses can struggle to survive; let alone thrive. For this reason, it pays to be aware of these incidents.

That said, if you have security precautions, a contingency plan and reliable back-ups in place, there’s no need to be scared. You can rest easy knowing that should a ransomware attack happen, you could continue your daily operations with minimal disruption.

At the NEBRC, we’re here to help businesses in the North East take action to improve their resilience and feel confident that they’re covered.

We can teach you and your team simple tips and tricks to help prevent hackers from gaining access to your systems in the first place.

We can also put you in touch with our professional cyber security partners who can help you review your current system to identify any weaknesses.

To give your businesses the best chance of recovery, you’ll need more than standard IT support. Ransomware prevention is necessary -it doesn’t need to be expensive – but it does require some expert know-how to be done properly.
