Three things you can do to protect your business from ransomware today

Updated: Oct 15, 2021

Ransomware has become a growing threat in recent years with high profile attacks on the Health Service and the Colonial Pipeline, among others. Indeed, research from Sophos highlights that 48% of UK organisations have been hit by ransomware in the last year.

The following guidance will help you to reduce the likelihood of a ransomware attack in your business:

1. Make regular backups

if you do encounter a ransomware attack it will be very important to have a backup of your data. The protocol for this will be different for every organisation –but check that you know how to restore your files, and regularly check all back-up systems.

2. Prevent malware from entering the system

use network services for filtering content and blocking potentially malicious websites. As a given, you should be looking to use device-level security features. Importantly, you should also keep your devices well-configured and up to date.

3. Prepare for the possibility of an incident

identify your critical assets and determine the impact on the organisation if these were affected – and make sure to make a backup of this vital data. It is important to also cover all bases and develop a strategy to inform the right stakeholders in a timely fashion.
