The Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) has warned that drivers are being targeted by car insurance scamson social media.
Learners and recently passed drivers are being urged to watch out for fake car insurance deals online.
Cyber criminals are reportedly pretending to be legitimate insurance brokers, offering cheap and fake policies to young drivers online – a scam known as “ghost broking.”
The IFB warned that new drivers could be paying hundreds of pounds for photoshopped insurance certificates.
Stolen personal information is even being used by scammers to take out policies, which are then doctored before being sold on.
Those who fall victim to such scams will be uninsured if they try to claim for an accident, where they could then face a hefty fine and points on their license.
They could even face a driving ban if they are discovered to be uninsured.
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is urging drivers to watch out for suspicious messages from scammers on social media offering cheap insurance deals and are advising younger drivers to only purchase insurance policies from trusted providers.
If you have fallen victim to an insurance scam or have found evidence of one, contact the IFB’s Cheatline.
