Research suggests that online shoppers are more likely to avoid retailers that have suffered a serious cyber attack.
A recent poll of over 2,100 UK consumers carried out by Akami revealed that 59% would stop shopping with retailers that suffered a major cyber breach.
49% of consumers stated that they do not trust that retailers will keep their personal data safe.
The poll also revealed that 59% of respondents would tell their friends to stop shopping with a retailer if they had fallen victim to a cyber attack.
The new findings indicate that retailers must have reliable cyber security procedures in place or face losing loyal customers.
This includes protecting data using backups, educating staff on how to stay safe, and improving communication with the customer base.
