A world-first Code of Practice has been introduced by the UK government to encourage app store operators and developers to prioritise cyber security to protect consumers.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) said that the new voluntary regulation includes requirements for those who sign up for it to have reporting procedures to flag issues and guarantee full transparency with users, among other measures.

Whilst only voluntary, the DCMS maintains that the Code of Practice will improve overall cyber security, as millions of people in the UK use their phones daily and are unaware of the risks that poor app security creates.

The government has said it will work with major tech companies such as Apple and Google to roll out the code over a nine-month period.

Developers and operators that adopt the code will be able to show that it is demonstrating strong cyber security practices by declaring this on their company website, app website, or on a relevant store page.
