Heading into the New Year, Microsoft has warned millions of its Windows users with older software to update to a newer version or be at risk of cyber breaches.
Support for Windows 8.1 is set to end on January 10th, which will leave many users without regular security updates and patches.
In a statement, Microsoft Support said: “Microsoft will not be offering an Extended Security Update (ESU) program for Windows 8.1.
“Continuing to use Windows 8.1 after January 10, 2023 may increase an organization’s exposure to security risks or impact its ability to meet compliance obligations.”
Threat actors may discover vulnerabilities within outdated software, which can grant easy access to devices that have not been updated to the latest version.
This could put confidential data, personal information, and other important files at risk of being accessed or stolen.
