UK cyber threat experts warn SMEs and sole traders of targeted attacks

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has recently released an advisory warning about the emerging threat of spear-phishing campaigns against organisations in the UK, which Russian and Iranian threat actors carry out.

Spear phishing involves a cyber attacker sending fraudulent emails or messages to individuals, posing as a trustworthy source, to steal sensitive information such as financial data or passwords.

These malicious campaigns were launched in 2022 and aimed at multiple organisations across the UK, including think tanks, government organisations, and the education sector.

To avoid falling victim to such sophisticated attacks, businesses must remain vigilant and understand how to recognise malicious emails.

Contact could begin as an attacker trying to gain your trust, which then develops into malicious links being sent that, if clicked on, could lead to a cyber breach and the loss of sensitive data.

To mitigate such activity, use strong and separate passwords for your email account, turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA), and protect your devices and networks by keeping them up to date.
