SCAM ALERT FOR BUSINESSES!
In the latest of a string of impersonation scams targeting Microsoft and Apple users in recent weeks, businesses are being warned that a fake Companies House email is in circulation threatening recipients with legal action.
These fake emails are being sent by scammers hoping to steal data or infect devices with malware, thus threatening significant disruption and risk to organisations they target.
How to spot a bogus email…
- Fake emails fail to address the recipient by name. Emails that open with a generic, ‘Dear Customer’ should raise red flags.
- The email should not feel threatening. Language such as, ‘Correction request: do not ignore to avoid legal action!’ would be inappropriate from a government agency.
- Check web links if a letter asks you to ‘download’. Check that the URL matches a legitimate website when hovering over the link.
